Founder of NY Punk Mecca CBGB Dies
Reuters/Thurs. Aug 30 2007
Hilly Kristal, the founder of New York punk rock club CBGB, which helped make the Ramones, Blondie and Talking Heads stars, has died at age 75.
Kristal died on Tuesday from complications of lung cancer, his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, confirmed.
He founded the club in 1973 hoping to showcase country music, calling it CBGB & OMFUG, for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gourmandizers."
But the club drew few country acts and instead became a breeding ground for punk rock, playing host to the likes of Patti Smith, Television, Living Colour as well as countless local hopefuls that never made it to the big time.
"He loved country, but he loved music even more, and as a singer-songwriter himself, he knew rock musicians needed a place to play their own music," his daughter said.
Marky Ramone of the Ramones said in a statement, "Hilly was an integral part of the punk scene from 1974 until his death."
"He was always supportive of the genre," he said. "In an era when disco was the mainstream, Hilly took a chance and gambled. The gamble paid off for both him and for us. We are all grateful to him and will miss him."
Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, who first played CBGB in the late 1980s, said agents from recording companies often came to the club. "So many bands would have never have made records unless they came to CBGB," he said.
Kristal was born in Manhattan but his father moved the family to Hightstown, New Jersey, soon after. He became a concert violinist by the age of 9. In the late 1950s, Kristal sang in the men's chorus at Radio City Music Hall.
He went on to manage Manhattan jazz haunt the Village Vanguard, booking acts like trumpet player Miles Davis. He opened a bar that served sandwiches, such as the Hilly burger, that later became CBGB.
Kristal lost a battle last year to stop CBGB from being evicted. Its last shows in October featured Patti Smith and Blondie's Debbie Harry. The club's clothing store, CBGB Fashions, remains open a few blocks from the original club.
"He wanted the club to survive him," his daughter said. "He is survived by the fans and bands that played there."

action packed day!
had a bit of a social day today. to be honest....not sure how i packed it all in!
it started off with coffee and doggie play time with michelle and peanut. peanut is a chihuahua/terrier cross. it was the frist time they had met and seemed to hit it off.
after that i headed to grandview lanes for some black light bowling action with doug and jill and their gang.....lots of fun!! i was terrible ...but that’s ok. next week we’re trying our hand at pitch and put! oh boy.
jill wasn’t happy w/ that throw....
after that i went to ani’s family bbq....funny...a little crazy...good food and people. i ducked out early to drive over to dunbar to have a beer with another friend. woaw...i’m tired. glad to be home and i think charlie is too!
rob took this pic of me and my new car...

buyer's remorse?
ok...i got my car. i like it. it's what i need, but i will miss my old one. it was a good speedy car and as people who have driven with me know...i like the speed. ;)
also i have to say the guys at pacific honda really didn't make it a pleasant experience. it's a long story but let just say i plan to write a letter complaint to honda canada about them. i really get the feeling that i got bad treatment b/c i was a single female on my own buying a car and i'm not letting the buggers get away with that.

:)
ps...i'm sorry to everyone about how dry, boring and infrequent my posts have been lately. there are a few reasons for that too much work being the main one.

low key weekend
not a super eventful weekend. got caught up on stuff..sorta. ok...i cleaned...a little. i napped alot. had a few things i was going to do that were cancelled. worked on some more doggie training.
ani picked up this nice bottle of wine for me in their US yesterday. they spend the day in blaine trying to get a tow truck to get them back over the border. even when her life is in turmoil...she's always thinking of others. that's my ani.
i will save it for a special night.
this afternoon i test drove the 2007 honda element....automatic. i'm officially old. can't take a stardard anymore. i swore i would never buy one...yet here i am. the dealer just have to find me the colour i want. i could have a new car by the end of the week. i think my body will thank me.

charlie goes to school
charlie had her first day at puppy class today. she did....well....let’s just say she did ok for her first day. sigh...we have practice to do!
afterwards i got a much needed massage....my back has been terrible. then off to doggy sit sophie. they played and played. i napped in ani’s back yard and smelled the clover. the perfect thing to do after a massage.
sophie and charlie going at it...
taking a break from playing...
i thought about stuff like.....have you every thought about how a natural sent never gets used up like a scent in a bottle does?
now i’m waiting for ani and rob to come get soph. they broke down in blaine....crappy.....

gotta love the cones....
pretty decent day all and all...met my friend dan this morning for a coffee and a doggie walk.
i really glad i’ve re connected with him...he’s a really great guy and i enjoy hangin' out with him.
not sure if i’ve told the story before but i know dan through the old dan....who some may know from ottawa/ toronto days....too long of a story really...but i meet dan and his former wife about 14years ago when i moved here. didn’t know him very well...would see him with the other dan at the railway sometimes and in the ‘hood with his kid....who is now 12. anyway...he found me on facebook and we went for coffee a couple of weeks ago. i hadn’t seen him in about 4years.
after that i meet with ani and soph for more doggie play time and more caffeine....i might now sleep tonight.
another weird 6 degrees of separation ani and dan were neighbours years ago...weird.
anyway, after my ani time and charlie’s sophie time the garbs came over and put up my angry ice cream cone!! it looks friggin’ awesome! i love it. the best part is....the eyes and teeth are glow in the dark. right on garbs...you did a good job!! :)

powel st fest...
i decided to stay in town instead of driving to seattle for the night....for a few reason i don't think i need to get into. so far i'm glad i did. spent some quality time with charlie...went to the powel st festival. something that's a bit of a tradition for me. had some machi and other japanese delights. also saw one of kimbas kids i hadn't seen in a few years...it was a nice outing.
charlie has tape on her ear to train it to go up...she hates it.
some weird shrine/art thing at the festival
view near my place...

happy birthday jill!
jilly and doug...such a cute couple
last night was jill’s 40th birthday celebration at the railway. dougy and his band the cadaver dogs played lots of people came. i actually did have a good time....all things considered.
is guys is either pro-panda...or is it propaganda and he can’t spell?
as my friend dan put it....”who’s ani-panda anyway?” good one dan.
only quality clientele at the rail....

broken ego
ok....i’m not sure how this happened...but i guess i misunderstood something tonight. something that has left me feeling sad, lonely and embarrassed. the person involoved in this misunderstanding...i'm pretty sure...has no idea...maybe will never.
and here i am...with my even more broken ego....alone.

i bumped into a whole bunch of people on the street today....seemingly randomly...including 7 swing dancers. it must have been a weird moon or something.
i went with ani and rob to a couple of art thingys tonight...one at red cat records my friend adam smith. he does some amazing performance photography. check it out on his blog;
